We’ve actually been to the doctor three times in the last week. Last Monday she went in because she had been fussy and not eating well for a few days. That Monday she hardly ate anything at all. We saw Dr. Sperling that day. She said that Audrey was fine. She was still having regular wet diapers so she wasn’t dehydrated and she weighed 10 lbs. 15 oz., so she was definitely getting enough to eat. She was a little congested and the doctor thought maybe that’s why she wasn’t eating well. Basically, we didn’t need to worry as long as she was still having wet diapers.
The rest of the week she still wasn’t eating much and she was fussy on and off. Friday night she had a little blood in two of her dirty diapers. I called Medlink since it was after hours and spoke to a nurse. She went through a bunch of questions with me and determined that it wasn’t an emergency, but we should see the doctor the next day. We saw Dr. Blumberg the next day (they have Saturday morning office hours). She weighed 11 lbs. 2.4 oz. It was a relief to know that she was still gaining weight even with her poor appetite. The doctor wasn’t too worried about her because she didn’t have a fever, looked healthy, etc. He took a blood sample and checked for anemia, which came up negative. He told me to avoid dairy for a while in case she’s having a reaction to that. We went home with a stool sample collection kit. That evening I had the pleasure of scraping the poop out of her diaper. Her diapers never bothered me much, but looking at it that closely made me realize how stinky and they are and what a funky texture they have. Audrey was in a really good mood that day, so we actually went Christmas shopping after seeing the doctor. We were out shopping for 5 hours, her longest outing to date. Since that day, she’s miraculously back to normal. She has her appetite back and has been pretty happy.
So today was her 2 month appointment. She weighed ll lbs. 5oz. (60 percentile), length 22.5 inches (50 percentile), head circumference 39 centimeters (55 percentile). We don’t have the results from the stool sample yet, but the doctor thinks she just had a bug or something that disagreed with her and now it’s gone. He’ll call and let us know when the results come in. There are lots of things that can cause blood in the stool, some of which are pretty scary, but in most cases it’s nothing. I’m going to avoid dairy for a little longer just in case that was the culprit. Audrey had her first round of shots today- DTaP, Hep B, IPV, Hib, Pneumococcal, and RotaTeq. We gave her some Tylenol before the shots and she doesn’t seem too bothered by them. The little bump on her head is gone now and the big bump has decreased dramatically in size, but it is pretty hard now and hasn’t changed in a few weeks. The doctor is going to consult with a radiologist about scanning it to see if it’s calcified. He just needs to determine at what age would it be appropriate and what kind of scan to do. His guess is that the lump will still disappear, but it will probably take longer than expected. Her next appointment will be when she’s 4 months old and she’ll get more shots then.
*update* The doctor spoke with a pediatric craniologist about Audrey's hematoma. He said that it's just cosmetic, so there isn't a medical reason to do an x-ray at this time. He said that it may very well still go away on it's own. They occasionally do elective surgery to remove hematomas, but that isn't even considered until the child is at least 9-12 months old. Now the plan is just to wait and see and not worry about it.
*Another update* The results from her poop test came back normal. She hasn't had any blood in her stool since then, so everything is fine.
